No. 23 Women's Golf Ready for Liz Murphey Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - After a month break from competition, the No. 23 Michigan State women's golf team returns to action this weekend (Friday-Sunday) for the 40th annual Liz Murphey Invitational at the par 72, 6,335-yard University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The challenging 17-team field features 13 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 50, including seven in the Top 25. MSU will tee off on Friday at 9 a.m. along with No. 36 Arkansas and No. 27 South Carolina. The Spartans have competed twice thus far in the spring season, tying for 10th at the Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif., on Feb. 13-15 and tying for sixth at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla., on Feb. 20-21. Junior Caroline Powers, ranked 14th in the Golfweek/Sagarin player ratings, leads MSU with a 73.17 scoring average. Powers is currently on pace to break her own single-season scoring record of 73.53 she set as a sophomore last season. In the last tournament, Christine Meier led the Spartans at the Central District Invitational with a career-best score of 218 and tied for sixth. Meier is fourth on the team with a 77.13 scoring average in five tournaments. Senior Lindsey Solberg is second on the team with a 75.89 average, while Allyssa Ferrell is third at 75.93. Liz Nagel, who has a 77.75 average, will round out the lineup for MSU at the Liz Murphey Invitational. Live scoring of this weekend's tournament will be available at golfstat.com.
