EAST LANSING - The Michigan State women's golf team will play its final regular-season tournament this weekend when it travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the Lady Buckeye Invitational. The tournament, played at Ohio State's Scarlet Course on Saturday and Sunday, will serve as final preparation before the Big Ten Championships the following weekend.
"We're looking forward to going to Ohio State as it's a tournament we go to every year," MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. "We feel really comfortable there, know the course well and always receive great fan support when playing in this tournament.
"We've gained a lot of confidence over the past few tournaments and we need to have another good weekend to be in position for the NCAA Regional selection."
The Spartans have finished in the top six of each of their last three tournaments, including a fifth-place showing at the Clemson Invitational the last time out. MSU is currently slotted No. 64 in the Golfstat.com poll and No. 67 by Golfweek.
The 54-hole tournament will get underway Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with shotgun start at the par-72, 6,319-yard Scarlet Course. Each team will play six golfers with the top four counting toward the team score.
Sunday's final round will also begin at 8:30 a.m. with teams beginning on holes No. 1 and 10.
The 12-team field includes three teams in the Golfstat.com top 30. MSU and host OSU will compete with No. 29 Illinois, Indiana, Indianapolis, No. 12 Kent State, Michigan, Minnesota, Penn State, Rutgers, No. 20 Texas and Toledo in this year's tournament.
Spartans at the Lady Buckeye
The Spartans have captured five Lady Buckeye Invitational titles, the most of any school outside host Ohio State. MSU's Lady Buckeye championships under head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll have come in 2005, 2011 and 2013.
Sarah Burnham was the runner-up at last year's tournament with a 2-under-par 214 (72-69-73), one shot out of first place. As a team, the Spartans placed fourth with a 24-over-par 888 (298-294-296).
The Spartan lineup will feature Sarah Burnham, Allyson Geer, Katie Sharp, Carolyn Markley, Paz Marfa Sans and Logan Otter, who will be getting her first action since the Central District Invitational (Feb. 20-21).
The Last Time Out: Clemson Invitational
The Spartans had their best finish of the spring in their last tournament, placing sixth in a competitive field at the Clemson Invitational (March 31-Apirl 1). Three Spartans placed in the top 15, led by Sarah Burnham, who placed eighth at 1-under-par (73-69-73-215).
Notes and Numbers
Sarah Burnham continues to lead MSU in total birdies (71), birdies per round (3.08) and rounds-under-par (9) ... Burnham leads MSU with a 72.34 average, followed by Allyson Geer at 73.66 ... Burnham, Geer, Paz Marfa Sans and Carolyn Markley have all lowered their total scores over each of the last three tournaments.
