Michigan State to Host 2019 and 2020 NCAA Golf Regionals

April 18, 2017

EAST LANSING - The NCAA announced on Tuesday that Michigan State University has been selected to host both the 2019 Women’s Golf NCAA Regional and the 2020 Men’s Golf NCAA Regional. The 2019 NCAA Women’s Regional will be played at Forest Akers West and the 2020 NCAA Men’s Regional will take place at Eagle Eye Golf Club. MSU will host the events in conjunction with the Greater Lansing Sports Authority.

“We are excited to be selected as host for the NCAA Regionals for both men’s and women’s golf,” MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis said. “There is a strong and passionate golf community in the mid-Michigan area and we look forward to bringing them some of the very best in the collegiate game. While hosting an NCAA championship is an honor for our university and athletic department, it’s a tremendous opportunity for our men’s and women’s teams, building upon the positive momentum within the programs.”

Forest Akers West is one of the premier golf courses in the region and continually ranked as one of Michigan’s best public courses. The par-72, 6,334-yard home course of the Spartans previously hosted a Women’s NCAA Regional in 2002.

“It’s very exciting to host an NCAA Regional at Forest Akers West,” MSU women’s golf head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. “It’s a lot of fun to have a hometown crowd see the NCAA Tournament and the excitement that goes along with the event. It will be nice to showcase Forest Akers West and it’s always a great feeling to be at home and to not have to travel. It’s very exciting news for our program.”

The 7,323-yard Eagle Eye is also one the state’s top public courses. Golf Digest magazine rated Eagle Eye’s 18 holes as the fifth-best public golf course in Michigan in 2014. It was rated 27th best public course in the nation and fourth-best in Michigan by GolfWorld subscribers in 2009.

“We are very excited for MSU and the Greater Lansing Area to be able to host the 2020 NCAA Golf Regional at Eagle Eye Golf Club,” MSU men’s golf head coach Casey Lubahn said. “We live in a very passionate golf community, and I am already excited about our fan base having the opportunity to see the finest in college golf on a spectacular facility at Eagle Eye. We are grateful to the entire Hawk Hollow Golf Properties staff, led by general manager Alex Coss. They have been an outstanding partner for our program, and they really embraced the idea of hosting this event. We also want to sincerely thank the Greater Lansing Sports Commission for their enthusiastic support of this proposal and their help pulling this community together to support this prestigious competition.”

Criteria for selecting the host sites included creating what will be an exceptional experience for the student-athletes, along with adherence to NCAA bid specifications. Specifications can include, but are not limited to, providing optimal facilities; ease of travel to the location and ample lodging; and adherence to NCAA principles, which include providing an atmosphere that is safe and respects the dignity of all attendees.
