EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's golf senior Sara Brown was an honorable mention selection to the Duramed FUTURES Tour NGCA Division I All-American team, announced on Friday, May 23 at the NGCA Division I Awards Banquet in Albuquerque, N.M.

Brown become the ninth All-America selection in Michigan State women's golf history and the first since Allison Fouch in 2004. She is also one of four Big Ten student-athletes to be named to the All-America teams, joining Purdue's Maria Hernandez (first team), Christina Boeljon (second team) and Maude Aimee Leblanc (honorable mention).

Brown finished her career as the school's all-time scoring leader with a 75.27 stroke average. She also has the top-two single-season averages, including a school-record 74.08 this season, and three of the top-six.

Her play this season ranked her No. 21 in the nation by Golfstat and No. 24 by Golfweek/Sagarin, as she had seven top-10 finishes in the team's 12 events. Among those outings, she has three individual tournament titles, which tied for second all-time in a MSU single-season.

Brown was also named to the All-Big Ten First Team for the third-consecutive season and has been a member of the Academic All-Big Ten Team since her sophomore season. Last week, she added to her academic honors, being named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Women's At-Large Academic All-District IV Second Team.

Duke's Amanda Blumenherst was named the PING NGCA Division I Player of the Year, along with taking home the Golfstat Cup and the Dinah Shore Trophy. USC head coach Andrea Gaston was named the Division I SkyCaddie NGCA National Coach of the Year, after leading the Trojans to the 2008 National Championship. Other awards that were issued at the banquet were the NGCA Division I Freshman of the Year (Cydney Clanton of Auburn), the NGCA Division I Kim Moore Spirit Award (Paige McCracken of Butler), the Edith Cummings Munson Golf Award (Azahara Munoz of Arizona State), the NGCA Assistant Golf Coach of the Year (Robin Walton of Florida) and the Division I SkyCaddie NGCA Regional Coaches of the Year (Florida's Jill Briles-Hinton - East Region; Kent State's Mike Morrow - Central Region; USC's Andrea Gaston - West Region).

 

 

The National Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing women's collegiate golf coaches. The NGCA was formed to encourage the playing of college golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition. Today, the NGCA represents nearly 500 coaches throughout the U.S. and is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes they represent.
