EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll won her sixth consecutive GAM Women's Mid-Amateur championship Wednesday afternoon at her home club, Walnut Hills Country Club. Slobodnik-Stoll, a Haslett native, shot 73-73--146 to finish 2-over-par for the two-day tournament. Enid Gage (Wyoming) and Ashley Crain (Birmingham) tied for second with 157.
"I figure I have to start early competing for the next Player of the Decade award," joked Slobodnik-Stoll, who earned GAM Player of the Decade honors earlier this year.
In truth, Slobodnik-Stoll did not feel that she played as well as she would have liked, even though she walked away with the championship. She would have liked to sink a few more birdies and always enters a competition with the goal of finishing under par.
"I shot two over par and I wanted to shoot some rounds under par," said Slobodnik-Stoll. "I didn't think that I played spectacular golf but I'm very hard on myself. I only had two birdies in two days and I want to start putting myself in birdie position more often."
Slobodnik-Stoll got her birdies on 6 and 9.
Still, she said it was a good tournament for her overall and she was able to sink some key putts despite intermittent rain and slow greens.
"I stand out in the rain with my teams all the time so rain doesn't bother me whatsoever," said Slobodnik-Stoll. "It's just a matter of figuring out what kind of gear and gloves to wear and figuring out a strategy from that standpoint."
The win was special for Slobodnik-Stoll not only because it was her sixth and it was on her home turf but because it is also her ninth wedding anniversary.
"It feels great," she said. "I love competing and I can't compete enough. I wish there were more tournaments I could play in during the summer but with a 6-year-old and a husband I'm somewhat limited. It was great to win the Mid-AM on by anniversary because now I have something to tie it to."
