Powers Qualifies for U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship

U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship Official Site EAST LANSING, Mich. - Caroline Powers has qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship after claiming medalist honors in a local qualifying event last week (May 29) with a 69. The 2012 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship will be held June 18-23 at Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J. This marks the third time Powers has qualified for the Public Links (2009, 2010). In her last appearance in 2010, Powers advanced to match play and won her first two matches before falling in the third round. This past season, Powers was named a National Golf Coaches Association honorable mention All-American for the second straight year. Also a first-team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive year, Powers led the team with a 73.78 scoring average and finished the season ranked 32nd in the nation by Golfweek. Powers' scoring average of 73.53 in 2010-11 was a MSU single-season record, and her average this year was second best in school history. The Bowling Green, Ohio, native placed in the top 10 in six of MSU's 12 tournaments this season, including a victory at the Mary Fossum Invitational in September. Powers tied for third at the Big Ten Championships with a 2-over 218 and was named to the All-Championships Team. She currently owns the best career scoring average in Michigan State history with a 74.39 (Laura Kueny second at 74.60).
