EAST LANSING - Michigan State women's golfer Allyson Geer has been awarded a sponsor exemption to play in the Meijer LPGA Classic, it was announced by the tournament on Thursday, June 8 in East Lansing. The 2017 Meijer LPGA Classic will take place June 15-18 at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids.
"I want to thank the tournament for this amazing opportunity and making a dream that I've had since I was a little girl come true," Geer said. "I'm so excited to get out there and test my game against the best players in the world while enjoying the experience and making the most of it."
Geer was the 2017 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten First Team. She had two top-five finishes and two top-20 finishes in appearing in all eight tournaments after joining the Spartans in January. Geer finished the season with a 74.08 scoring average, ranking second on the team.
Geer was one of three collegiate golfers to earn an exemption, joining Megan Kim of Michigan and August Kim of Purdue.
"We are so excited to be able to provide these young athletes the opportunity to compete with the best women golfers in the world," said Cathy Cooper, Director of the Meijer LPGA Classic. "We think this is a great opportunity for these athletes to show their talent while supporting the Meijer brand."
The Meijer LPGA Classic will include a full field of 144 of the world's best women golfers competing in 72 holes of stroke play over four days. Proceeds from the tournament -- and each of the week's festivities -- will once again benefit the Meijer Simply Give program that restocks the shelves of food pantries across the Midwest.
