Nagel Advances to Semifinals of Match Play at Michigan Women's Amateur

2012 Michigan Women's Amateur Match Play Bracket EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State rising junior Liz Nagel has advanced to the semifinals in the match-play bracket of the Michigan Women's Amateur following her two victories on Thursday at Forest Akers West. Nagel, who earned the top seed in the 32-person match-play bracket after winning stroke-play medalist honors on Tuesday, defeated Gabby Yurik in the round of 16, 1 up, and then followed with a 2 up victory over teammate and defending champion Christine Meier in the quarterfinals. Nagel topped teammate Mariah Massia in the first round of match play on Wednesday, 3 & 2. Meier began her day with a 5 & 4 victory over Hanna Lewis before falling to Nagel. Sophomore Bea Murray also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4 & 3 win over Kelsey Murphy in the morning. Murray dropped her quarterfinal match to Jacqueline Setas, 2 & 1, in the afternoon. Former Spartan and 2010 Michigan Women's Amateur champion Natalie Brehm reached the semifinals after her 5 & 3 win over Aya Johnson in the quarterfinals. Nagel will play against fifth-seeded Emmie Pietila at 8 a.m. in the first semifinal match on Friday, while Brehm will take on Setas at 8:15 a.m. The two winners will meet in the championship match later in the day.
