POWELL, Ohio - Liz Nagel and Trisha Witherby tied for fifth place at the Pure Silk Women's Team Collegiate Championship this week, while Christine Meier and Lindsey McPherson placed 13th. The three-round tournament, which is the most unique summertime national women's amateur championship, concluded Thursday at the Wedgewood Golf & Country Club.

Two-person teams comprised of top current women's collegiate golfers competed in the third annual event. Each team paired players from the same university in a 54-hole stroke play event. MSU was one of five schools with two teams in the tournament.

The format of the championship was alternate shot for the first round, best ball for the second round, and aggregate score of the two players in the third round.

Nagel and Witherby teamed up to tie for fifth place with a 2-over 290. They combined for a 1-over 73 in the alternate shot round, but moved up the leaderboard with a 4-under 68 in the best ball round. They finished with a combined score of 149 in the third round on Thursday, as Witherby shot a 72 and Nagel carded a 77.

Meier and McPherson finished in 13th with an 8-over 296. After shooting a 74 in the first round (alternate shot), they posted one of the best scores of the day in the second round (best ball) with a 67. On Thursday, Meier compiled a 74 and McPherson shot an 81 as they totaled a 155.

A.J. Newell and Erica Popson of Tennessee won the event with a 286. Last year, Spartan golfers Caroline Powers and Lindsey Solberg claimed the championship.
