Lindsey McPherson, Caroline Powers Ready for U.S. Women's Amateur

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Spartan golfers Lindsey McPherson and Caroline Powers will compete in the 112th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship next week (Aug. 6-12) at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio. The nation's premier amateur tournament features 156 qualifiers from around the world.

Powers punched her ticket to the event by tying for first place at her qualifier with a round of 72 on July 16 at the Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis. She also qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur in 2010.

Earlier this summer, Powers placed third at the World University Games (July 3-6) in Liberec, Czech Republic, with a four-round total of 11-under 277 (72-69-68-68) and helped the United States to a second-place finish in the 16-team field.

A two-time All-Big Ten First Team selection and honorable mention All-American, Powers enters her senior season at MSU in 2012-13 with the lowest career scoring average in program history at 74.39.

McPherson tied for second at her qualifying event by carding a 75 at the Country Club of Detroit in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., on July 10. This marks her first time playing in the U.S. Women's Amateur.

As a red-shirt freshman, McPherson played in one tournament last season for the Spartans and has had a successful summer, not only qualifying for the U.S. Women's Amateur, but also advancing to the second round of match play in the Michigan Women's Amateur last month.

The 2012 U.S. Women's Amateur begins with stroke play on Monday (Aug. 6) and Tuesday (Aug. 7). The top 64 players will advance to match play, which starts on Wednesday (Aug. 8) and concludes with the championship match on Sunday (Aug. 12). The Golf Channel will broadcast the match play portion every day (Wednesday-Saturday) from 3-5 p.m.
