EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 22 Michigan State women's golf team, fresh off its home victory at the Mary Fossum Invitational, will travel to Franklin, Tenn., this weekend (Sept. 20-22) to compete in the Mason Rudolph Championship at the par-72, 6,337-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Michigan State placed third at the prestigious tournament last year, which is being held at the site of the 2012 NCAA Championships. This year's 15-team field features eight teams (No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Duke, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 11 North Carolina, No. 12 Vanderbilt, No. 17 Virginia, No. 18 Baylor) in the Golfweek preseason Top 20, and eight teams that competed in the 2013 NCAA Championships.
The Spartans opened the 2013-14 season with a win in their only home tournament of the season, the Mary Fossum Invitational, last weekend (Sept. 14-15) at Forest Akers West Golf Course on the campus of MSU. MSU (892) defeated Ohio State (896) by four shots to take first place.
Senior Liz Nagel claimed medalist honors with a 1-over-par 217 (68-75-74) and was named the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week and the National Golfer of the Week by Golfweek for her efforts. Her first-round 68 tied a career low and also tied the second-lowest single-round score in MSU history.
Two other Spartans placed in the top 15, as senior Allyssa Ferrell finished sixth with a 6-over 222 (72-72-78) and true freshman Kelly Grassel tied for 14th with a 226 (73-74-79) in her first collegiate tournament.
