EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team returns to the site of the 2012 NCAA Championships this weekend as the Spartans will compete in the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course in Franklin, Tenn. MSU, making its 10th appearance at nationals, finished in 20th place at the NCAA Championships in May.
The 15-team field for the Mason Rudolph Championship features six teams ranked in the Golfworld/National Golf Coaches Association Preseason Top 25, including eighth-ranked and host Vanderbilt. The 54-hole tournament begins Friday and runs through Sunday; live scoring for the entire tournament will be available at golfstat.com. MSU will tee off from hole No. 10 on Friday starting at 9:15 a.m.
The Spartans are coming off a second-place showing at their home tournament last weekend, the Mary Fossum Invitational, held at Forest Akers West. Although MSU posted a better score than in 2011 when it won the team title, No. 22 Purdue came away with first place this year after tying a tournament record team score of 875. Michigan State posted a three-round total of 882 (297-289-296), led by senior Caroline Powers, who finished runner-up with a 1-over 217 (73-71-73) in her final home tournament as a Spartan.
Joining Powers in the starting lineup this weekend will be junior Christine Meier, junior Allyssa Ferrell, sophomore Trisha Witherby and junior Liz Nagel. Sophomore Jenny Sritragul will also make the trip and compete as an individual. Meier delivered her fourth career top-10 finish by tying for ninth at the Fossum Invitational with a 222 (74-75-73). Ferrell carded the lowest round of her career with a 69 in the second round on Saturday and closed at 224 to tie for 12th. Witherby, playing in just her fourth tournament, posted the top finish of her young career by also tying for 12th.
Nagel was competing for the second team last weekend for MSU and placed 11th with a 223, tying for the second-lowest 54-hole score of her career. As a starter, Sritragul finished 21st by carding a 226.
Powers, Meier, Ferrell and Nagel all competed in the NCAA Championships for the Spartans in May.
