PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Junior Caroline Powers has been named the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced on Thursday. Powers won her second career tournament by shooting a 1-over 217 (71-71-75) at last weekend's Mary Fossum Invitational held at Forest Akers West on the MSU campus.

This marks the second time Powers has been awarded Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors; she also claimed the award following her first tournament victory last April at the Lady Buckeye Invitational.

Powers, who won the Fossum Invitational by four strokes over Michigan's Yugene Lee, became the sixth Spartan to claim medalist honors at MSU's home event, and the first since Laura Kueny in 2007. Powers joined the elite class of Syd Wells (1982), Lisa Marino (1985), Kasey Gant (1997 and 1998), Allison Fouch (2003) and Kueny to win an individual crown at the Fossum Invitational.

Michigan State also won the team title at the Mary Fossum Invitational by 15 strokes over Ohio State. The Spartans shot a team score of 892 (286-298-308). Ranked No. 19 in the NCGA/Golf World Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Spartans return to action Oct. 7-9 for the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
