EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team resumes its fall season this weekend at the Tar Heel Invitational (Friday-Sunday, Oct. 7-9). The 18-team tournament, which is 54 holes over three days, is being held at the par 72, 6,285-yard UNC Finley Golf Course. Fifteen of the 18 teams are ranked in the top 50 of the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, and eight are ranked in the top 25.
The Spartans are coming off a 15-stroke victory at the Mary Fossum Invitational Sept. 17-18 at Forest Akers West. MSU won its home tournament for the seventh time in the last nine years, and Caroline Powers claimed medalist honors for the second time in her career. Powers was named the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week following her performance.
The Spartans have historically played well at the Tar Heel Invitational. In 2009, Michigan State won the elite tournament in record-setting fashion, winning by 12 strokes with a school-record 54-hole score of 860 (-4), and Laura Kueny tied for second with a 212, which is tied for the third-best 54-hole individual total in school history. The Spartans also recorded two of their top-five team rounds in program history (283 and 285).
Last season, Powers led Michigan State by recording the second-best 54-hole tournament score in program history with a 5-under 211 (71-71-69). Powers tied her career-best round with a 69 in the third round and finished in a tie for 10th overall on the individual leaderboard, She carded 13 birdies in the tournament. Powers narrowly missed the school-record score of 210, which was set by Rachel Meikle at the Northwestern Invitational in April 2006.
Powers is currently ranked No. 33 in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual rankings and leads MSU with her 73.83 scoring average.
Senior Lindsey Solberg is also ranked among the top 150 players in the nation by Golfweek (No. 133). Solberg finished sixth at the Fossum Invitational and owns a scoring average of 76.17 through two tournaments.
Sophomore Liz Nagel will start in her third straight tournament of the season, and sophomore Christine Meier is back in the lineup after missing the Fossum Invitational with an injury. Sophomore Allyssa Ferrell also qualified and will be MSU's fifth starter.
