EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf program will be well represented at the third and final stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament, scheduled for Dec. 4-8 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Current Spartan senior Christine Meier and former Spartan All-American Caroline Powers recently advanced to the third stage by placing in the top 80 at the second stage Oct. 8-11 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla.
Powers, MSU's all-time record holder for career scoring average (74.26) and single-season average (73.53), tied for 18th place with a 2-under-par 286 (74-70-71-71). Following her record-setting career at Michigan State, Powers qualified and played in the 2013 U.S. Women's Open and also participated in two Symetra Tour events this summer, including a 10th-place showing at the Decatur-Forsyth Classic in June. She also had a sponsor exemption to play in the LPGA's Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio.
Meier tied for 80th with a 6-over 294 (71-73-77-73) to make the cut for the final stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament as an amateur. Needing a top-100 finish in the first round of qualifying, held Aug. 27-30 at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., Meier tied for 98th place with an 11-over 299 (76-72-74-77). Meier tied a school record by tying for sixth place at the 2013 NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga.
Joining Meier and Powers in the final stage of qualifying will be former All-American Laura Kueny, who finished 14th on the Symetra Tour money list this season with $28,816 in 15 tournaments. Kueny won the Symetra Classic on May 11 in Charlotte, N.C., for her first professional victory, and also placed second at the Decatur-Forsyth Classic in June.
The final stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament will be held Dec. 4-8 at the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International at Daytona Beach, Fla. The top finishers receive LPGA membership (total number TBD) and all other players who complete a minimum of 72 holes will receive Symetra Tour status; 2014 category status and number of membership cards will be determined by LPGA prior to the commencement of the Qualifying School Stage III competition.
