Megan Bergland enters her second season as a student coach for the Spartans in 2010. A team member from 2007-08, Bergland was forced to retire this year due to injury.
Two seasons ago, Bergland was named to the Academic All-Big Ten and NACGC/W All-Academic teams for the second-straight year. She competed on the uneven bars for the Spartans in 13 of 14 meets, and tied her career-high with a 9.925 on the bars in a tri-meet with Ball State and Western Michigan on March 2. Bergland took second on bars vs. Maryland on Feb. 9 with a 9.750, and tied for third on bars (9.775) against New Hampshire on March 9.
In 2007, Bergland earned Academic All-Big Ten and NACGC/W All-Academic honors. She competed in all 13 meets in her first season in Green and White and placed third on the bars (9.850) at Arizona in her first collegiate meet. She performed in the all-around for the only time during the season at West Virginia on Feb. 23, tallying a score of 38.725, including a season-best 9.625 on the vault and a 9.800 on the beam to place third. Bergland finished second on the bars at the first annual Flip For The Cure meet with a score of 9.875, and set a season-high in the balance beam at the State of Michigan Classic on Feb. 3 to place in a tie for fourth. She won her first individual event in a Spartan uniform vs. Michigan (March 3), placing first in the bars with a season-best score of 9.900. Bergland set a new career standard in the floor exercise of 9.875 to finish third, while also placing second in the bars (9.875) and fifth on the beam (9.800) at Western Michigan on March 18. She also competed for the Spartans in the postseason, recording a 9.775 on the bars at the Big Ten Championship, and tying for 12th on the floor with a score of 9.800 at the NCAA Central Regional.
A Michigan native, Bergland was a three-time Level 10 national qualifier (2003, 2005-06). She trained with U.S. Airborne in Grand Rapids for Shelly Robinson, and captured first place at the 2006 Region 5 Championship Meet in the all-around, bars and floor exercise events. Bergland was a member of the National Honor Society.
Bergland is the daughter of Dave and Kathy Bergland. She was born on Sept. 3, 1987 in Indianapolis, Ind. Bergland has two brothers, Joey and Greg, and one sister, Rachel. She's majoring in elementary education and is set to graduate in 2010.
