EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite a school-record performance of 39.525 by Kristen Coleman in the all-around competition, the Michigan State gymnastics team fell to 3-3 on the year, suffering a 194.850-194.425 defeat to Ohio State on Saturday night at Jenison Field House. UIC also competed in the Flip For The Cure Meet, which benefited the American Cancer Society Strides For Breast Cancer cause, finishing third with an overall score of 190.125. Coleman took first-place honors on the uneven bars (9.950), balance beam (9.850), and finished tied for first on the floor exercise with teammate Nicole Curler with a mark of 9.850, while her all-around mark was the meet's top performance. Coleman's all-around tally was the top Spartan mark since the 1996 season.

"Our team will continue to get better," Spartan head coach Kathie Klages said. "I was very proud of the way our young squad stepped up to the challenge with the injuries we've had this week, and I was very proud of the outstanding all-around score that Kristen (Coleman) had tonight. Also, I'd like to thank all of the wonderful fans, family members and supporters who joined us at Jenison Field House tonight for our 2007 breast cancer awareness meet. The entire gymnastics community appreciates all of their support for the cause."

State trailed the Buckeyes, 49.100-49.025, following the first rotation after posting a strong score on the vault. MSU freshman Rochelle Robinson took first with a (9.950), followed by Coleman, Curler and Ohio State's Maalika Moore-Thomas who each registered a 9.875 on the event.

MSU competed on the uneven bars during the second rotation of the night (48.675) where Coleman posted a career-high 9.950 to capture first-place honors, followed by freshman Megan Bergland and Moore-Thomas who each posted a 9.875 to finish second. Robinson contributed a 9.825 for a sixth-place finish, while Katlyn Roggensack tied for 11th with a 9.700 for the Green and White.

 

 

Coleman and Roggensack swept the top two spots on the balance beam, posting scores of 9.850 and 9.800, respectively. MSU combined for a 48.600 on the beam, as Curler posted a 9.725 and senior Victoria Iakounina contributed a 9.625 for the Spartans.

MSU entered the final rotation of the night leading both Ohio State (146.135) and UIC (141.775) with a score of 146.300 through the first three sets. The Buckeyes rallied for a combined score of 48.725 on the vault to edge the Spartans who posted a 48.125 on the floor exercise. Coleman and Curler each posted a 9.850 on the floor to win the event, while Dani Fanning also contributed a 9.650 for MSU.

Michigan State returns to Jenison Field House on Saturday, Feb. 3 to host the State Of Michigan Classic. The meet is slated for a 7 p.m. start time.
