Spartan Gymnastics Falls To No. 2 Florida, 197.675-195.375
March 16, 2007 GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Michigan State gymnastics team (10-7) suffered a 197.675-195.375 loss to No. 2 Florida (15-0-1) in a dual meet on Friday evening. Senior Kristen Coleman led MSU with a second-place finish in the all-around (39.350), while freshman Rochelle Robinson captured MSU's lone individual event title, posting a 9.900 to win the vault competition. "The meet started out rather rough for us tonight," MSU head coach Kathie Klages said. "Our team really stayed focused throughout the meet and pulled together to improve on each rotation. We are thrilled with this road score, which will replace our lower away meet total in our RQS average." Florida's Corey Hartung finished first in the all-around with a 39.500, followed by Coleman and MSU freshman Nicole Curler in third with a 39.250. Robinson also competed in the all-around for the Spartans, finishing sixth with a combined 38.700. Robinson's vault score was a meet-best, while Florida dominated the uneven bar competition, sweeping the top four spots. Coleman (9.875) placed seventh as the top Spartan finisher on the event, while Melanie Sinclair led Florida on the apparatus, finishing first with a 9.950. The Gators also took the top three spots on the balance beam, led by Breanne King with a 9.900, while Robinson and Curler tied with Gator gymnast Katie Rue four fourth with a mark of 9.825. Sinclair, Amanda Castillo and MSU's Curler took top honors on floor, each posting a 9.950. The mark was a career high for Curler. State competed on the uneven bars during the night's opening rotation, posting a combined team score of 48.275. Katlyn Roggensack was the second-highest MSU finisher with a 9.825, while freshman Megan Bergland and Curler contributed scores of 9.775 and 9.700, respectively.
Anchored by Robinson's 9.900, MSU posted a 49.000 on vault during the second rotation of the evening. Coleman and junior Rhiannon Banda-Scott each earned a 9.800 to finish tied for fifth, while Curler also posted a strong mark of 9.775 for the Green and White. Michigan State earned a team score of 49.125 on floor during the third rotation. Curler's mark was a team-best and career-high, while Coleman turned in a sixth-place performance, matching a career-high 9.900 on the event. Robinson finished just behind in seventh place with a 9.875. The Spartans tallied a team total of 48.975 on the balance beam during the meet's final rotation. Robinson and Curler each contributed a 9.825 to finish tied for fourth as MSU's highest finishers on the apparatus, while Roggensack and Coleman added scores of 9.800 and 9.775, respectively. Michigan State continues regular season action when it travels to Western Michigan on Sunday for a dual-meet with the Broncos in Kalamazoo at 1 p.m. |
