KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Behind a record-breaking performance in the all-around by senior Kristen Coleman, the MSU gymnastics team improved to 11-6 for the year with a 196.300-194.250 victory over Western Michigan on Sunday. Coleman broke the all-around record for the second time this season, posting a 39.625 to capture first place on the event.

"I was very pleased with the energy and excitement that our team brought to the meet today," Spartan head coach Kathie Klages said. "This is our second strong road score of the weekend and it will really help our RQS average in the national standings."

En route to a first place finish in the all-around, Coleman broke her own record which she set during the Jan. 27 Flip For the Cure meet with a 39.525. Bronco gymnasts Jennifer Sturgis (39.225) and Andrea Perini (38.925) finished second and third, respectively, in the all-around behind Coleman. Spartan tumblers Nicole Curler (38.650) and Rochelle Robinson (38.100) also competed in the all-around, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Spartans won every event in the competition except the balance beam where WMU tallied a 48.925 against the 48.625 of the Spartans. MSU began the meet on the uneven bars, posting a strong mark of 49.200. Coleman (9.925) and freshman Megan Bergland (9.875) swept the top two spots, while Robinson tied with Perini for third with a 9.825.

State competed on vault during the second rotation, posting a collective score of 49.050. Junior Rhiannon Banda-Scott posted a career high on the apparatus with a 9.875. She tied with Robinson for first-place honors on the event. Coleman completed the Spartan sweep of the top three spots with a 9.850.

 

 

Michigan State posted a season high and matched the sixth-highest total in Spartan history with a team score of 49.425 on the floor exercise. State swept the top four spots, led by Coleman with a career-best 9.950. Megan McNally took second with a career-high 9.900, followed by Bergland (9.875) and Curler (9.875) who finished tied for third.

State tallied a 48.625 on balance beam during the meet's final rotation. WMU's Jennifer Sturgis and Coleman tied for first with a 9.900, while Bronco tumbler Courtney Lesson and MSU's Katlyn Roggensack finished tied for third with matching 9.825s on the event.

Michigan State concludes the 2007 regular season at home on March 23 versus NC State. The meet is slated to start at 7 p.m.
