No. 19 Spartan Gymnastics Defeats No. 23 NC State In Home Finale

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In front of a strong crowd celebrating Senior Night festivities at Jenison Field House, the 19th-ranked MSU Gymnastics team defeated No. 23 NC State, 195.500-195.325, in a tight finish at Friday night's regular-season finale. Senior Kristen Coleman won the all-around competition with a 39.225 for the Green and White, while four different Spartans captured individual event titles. "This was a good performance from our team tonight," Michigan State head coach Kathie Klages said. "I know we can improve on our score, but its always an emotional night saying goodbye to such a talented and fabulous senior class. We will build upon this finish as we begin our championship season." Rochelle Robinson finished second in the night's all-around competition with a 39.200, while Wolfpack gymnast Heather Zolton tallied a 39.050 to finish third. Spartan tumbler Nicole Curler also competed on all four events in the competition, finishing fourth with a 38.675. During the opening rotation, Coleman tallied a 9.875 to tie with NC State's Rachel Katz for first place on vault, propelling the Spartans to a season-high 49.100 team score on the apparatus. Junior Rhiannon Banda-Scott and Robinson matched 9.825's to finish tied for third on the event. Senior Victoria Iakounina tallied a 9.775 in her final home meet as a member of the Spartan squad. MSU tallied a team score of 48.775 on the uneven bars during the night's second rotation. Freshman tumbler Megan Bergland tallied a 9.825 to tie for first-place honors with NCSU's Heather Zolton on the event. Junior Katlyn Roggensack was the next finisher for the Green and White, finishing fourth overall with a 9.775, followed by Curler in fifth with a 9.750.
Holding a 97.875-97.450 advantage entering the third rotation, MSU tallied a strong team score of 48.850 on the balance beam. Curler matched a season-high 9.925 to capture her third beam title of the year, while Coleman finished second with a 9.900 and Robinson took fourth with a 9.800. State held a slight lead at 146.725-146.525 as each team advanced to the meet's last rotation. Despite an out-of-bounds deduction and fall, Michigan State tallied a 48.775 on floor, against a 48.800 by NC State on beam to close the 195.500-195.325 victory. Robinson tied with NCSU's Leigha Hancock for first on floor wiith a 9.900, followed by Katz (9.875) and Bergland (9.800), who finished third and fourth, respectively.
