April 14, 2007
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 19th-ranked Michigan State gymnastics team finished fourth at the NCAA Central Region Championships held at Coleman Coliseum on the campus of the University of Alabama on Saturday night with a team score of 194.800. Host Alabama took first with a 196.700, followed by Oklahoma (195.925), who defeated Iowa State in a tiebreaker, as the Cyclones also tallied a team total of 195.925. Following the Spartans was Ohio State (194.650) in fifth and Kentucky (194.025) in sixth. Michigan State will not advance as a team, however, freshman tumbler Rochelle Robinson finished tied for eighth in the all-around with a career-high mark of 39.225, and will advance to the NCAA National Championship Meet as an individual competitor as one of the top-two finishers not on an advancing team. Robinson tied with Kentucky's Krystle Cook, but had a higher individual event score to win the tiebreaker and advance to the Championships. Alabama gymnast Terin Humphrey won the all-around title with a 39.475. "I am just so pleased with the comeback this team performed tonight after a rough meet at the Big Ten Championships. I'm also so proud of Rochelle (Robinson), she hit all four of her routines tonight and she is peaking at the right time for the National Championship Meet." Following a second-rotation bye, the Spartans nailed a solid floor routine during rotation three, posting a team total of 48.650. Robinson's energetic routine entertained the crowd, as she led the set for the Green and White with a 9.900, followed by Bergland and Megan McNally who each contributed a 9.800 on the event.
