ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State gymnastics team was edged by Michigan 195.375-191.100 on Friday, Dec. 7, in its final exhibition meet of the season.
"Though we had many mistakes tonight, the competition did what we needed it to do," said head coach Kathie Klages. "We got the team out in front of an audience in a different arena and completed routines without watering down our skills. We are really proud of the team and will get right back to work to correct our mistakes."
Alina Cartwright, Nicola Deans and Taira Neal had a three-way tie to lead the Spartans on the vault with 9.775 score. Michigan's Joanna Sampson placed first on the vault tallying a score of 9.950. MSU posted a team score of 48.400 on the vault.
On the uneven bars, Lisa Burt led Michigan State with a 9.750 score. Katie Zurales and Sachi Sugiyama for Michigan topped the scores for uneven bars with 9.850. The Spartans finished out the uneven bars recording a score of 47.875.
Cartwright and Brittany Holmes notched a 9.625 on the balance beam contributing to Michigan State's total score of 47.450. Michigan's Shelby Gies led on the balance beam with a 9.800.
Burt led the Green and White in floor exercise with a 9.750 score. Sugiyama tallied a 9.850 as the high on the event. Michigan State scored a 47.375 in the rotation.
Competing in all-around were Burt and Cartwright scoring 38.325 and 37.225, respectively.
The Spartans will begin their regular-season facing Western Michigan in Jenison Field House on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 4 p.m.
