EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State gymnastics team opened the 2013 preseason with its annual Green and White meet on Sunday afternoon. Held inside Jenison Field House, the intra-squad scrimmage was the first opportunity for the Spartans to perform their 2013-14 routines.
“I think it’s really important to get the girls in front of the judges,” said head coach Kathie Klages. “In the past, we’ve done some celebrity judges at this competition. When I told them that we were brinigng four real judges, they got a little bit nervous. I could definitely see those nerves today, but that’s all good. It’s good to get them to know what it’s going to be like in a competition-setting. It will help them for the next competition. They’ve very successful competitors in practice, and we’ve just got to carry that over to the competition floor. I think it’s all a learning experience.”
The team kicked the meet off on vault where junior Alina Cartwright turned in the Spartans top performance, while also leading the team on the uneven bars. Sophomore Brittany Holmes was the top Spartan on beam, while freshman Elena Lagoski turned in MSU’s standout performance on the floor exercise.
The Spartans will be back in action for their second and final exhibition meet as they host Western Michigan on Friday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. in Jenison Field House.
