MSU Gymnastics Shines Saturday at Meet the Spartans
Spartans performed routines and signed autographs for fans.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State gymnastics hosted its annual Meet the Spartans event inside Jenison Field House Saturday afternoon in front of an energetic crowd.
The meet featured performances in all four events, as a way for the Spartans to get a feel for an actual meet in preparation for the upcoming season.
“We know what we have to do, and I think at this point in the game, even though we’ve watered down some routines, we are on track for the season,” said head coach Mike Rowe. “It’s exciting because we still have a handful of athletes coming back from injury that will be ready and able to give us some depth.”
Among the highlights on Saturday were solid performances by junior Roya Shirley and freshman Lea Mitchell. The senior duo of Hailee Westney and Tessa Jaranowski also performed well on the uneven bars and balance beam, respectively. After the meet, the team signed autographs and took photos with fans.
“We’re really excited about how today went. There were some really good individual performances. At this point we’re happy with where we are. We’re always addressing details and working harder and raising the bar on the girls on every event,” said Rowe. “It was really nice to have this event in the arena because in the past we have opened with our home opener down here. With seven freshmen, we wanted them to have that experience of being on the equipment in the arena. Having the support from the crowd and the cheering gave them a better feel of what it was really like.”
The team opens the 2018 season on Friday, January 5 hosting Bowling Green in a 6 p.m. meet inside Jenison.
