Gymnastics Opens 2005 Season With Intra-squad Green And White Exhibition Contest
Dec. 18, 2004
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics opened the 2005 season with its annual Green and White exhibition meet on Saturday, Dec. 18 at Jenison Field House.
"I was very pleased with the performance on both sides today," said MSU head coach Kathie Klages. "After a long week of final exams and a pre-season riddled with injuries, I am thrilled about what the team accomplished. Everyone really rose to the occasion."
The Spartans were divided into two teams and each featured seven gymnasts, with four athletes' scores counting toward the final tally.
The Green team posted a total score of 152.425, defeating the White team's 150.225 effort.
MSU seniors had a strong showing throughout the contest. Senior Lauren Simpson led the Spartans on bars, posting 9.800. Senior Jennifer Yarbrough's beam performance earned her a 9.775, the highest score of the day on beam.
Alexander also topped the scores for her team on the floor, posting 9.825.
Two Spartans competed in the all-around with Yarbrough posting 38.150 and freshman Bethany Little registering 36.775.
In looking to the inception of regular-season competition, Klages identifies a number of items on which her team will concentrate for improvement.
"There are a few things that we need to focus on," Klages said. "We need to work on hitting handstands and really selling our floor performance. On the floor, there were a couple of situations in which we didn't complete our choreographed tumbling, so we have to make sure to include the upgrades to our routines."
MSU returns to competition for its first regular-season meet on Friday, Jan. 7, when the Spartans will host Ball State, Denver and Louisiana State at Jenison Field House for a 7 p.m. contest.
