EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State gymnastics team returns to East Lansing for its first home Big Ten meet of the 2013 season. The Spartans will face the undefeated Gophers of No. 10 Minnesota at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1.
Michigan State gymnastics fell to Illinois, 196.125-193.350, on Jan. 26. On vault, senior Taira Neal placed first, recording a season-high score of 9.850. Freshman Lisa Burt and Neal posted a 9.700 to tie for sixth as they led the Spartans on uneven bars. Notching a season-high of 9.775 on the balance beam was sophomore Ashley Noll. Noll was part a three-way tie for fourth on the event. Deans scored a season-high on floor and led the Spartans for the second-consecutive week with a 9.875.
Matching Up Against Minnesota
Minnesota defeated Michigan, Central Michigan and Iowa State on Jan. 26, scoring 196.800. Leading on vault and first overall was Kayla Slechta, notching a 9.950 and averaging a 9.938 this season. The Gophers totaled a 49.325 on the event. Cierra Tomson placed second on uneven bars, earning a mark of 9.825 and contributing to the team's score of 48.875. Lindsay Mable led Minnesota and topped the competition on the balance beam, 9.900, and floor exercise, 9.925. The Gophers tallied a 49.150 on beam and a high of the night, 49.450, on floor. In the all-around competition, Mable also placed first, recording a 39.450.

Flip for a Cure
The Michigan State gymnastics team will host an Autism Awareness meet against Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 16, that will air live on the Big Ten Network. Other meets to be on the Big Ten Network include Illinois at Michigan (Jan. 19), Penn State at Nebraska (Feb. 10), Minnesota at Iowa (Feb. 22), and the Big Ten Gymnastics Championships (Mar. 23).
The meet this Friday serves as Michigan State gymnastics' Jan Howard Memorial Breast Cancer Awareness Meet. The meet is in honor of Jan Howard, the mother of former Spartan gymnast Angela Howard Montie, and is a tradition that started in 2007.
All attendees are encouraged to wear pink for free admittance. Autographs will be available after the meet by the Spartan gymnasts.
2013 Big Ten Gymnastics Championships
MSU will host the 2013 Big Ten Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, Mar. 23. The meet will be divided into two sessions featuring teams ranked 5-8 at 1 p.m. and 1-4 at 6 p.m. An all session pass can be purchased for $12 for adults and $10 for students, youth and seniors, while single session tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for students, youth and seniors.
Michigan State will head out on the road to face Iowa on Friday, Feb. 8., at 8 p.m.
