GREEN AND WHITE ON THE ROAD
No. 23 Michigan State gymnastics (10-9) hopes to extend its streak of wins beyond East Lansing. The Spartans hit the road for a March 5 contest at No. 13 Oregon State at 7 p.m., where they will also face No. 14 Brigham Young, Boise State, Sacramento State and Seattle Pacific. MSU will also compete at Boise State at 7 p.m. on March 7, before returning to Spartan country.

SPARTANS SMASH ALL-TIME BEST RECORD
For the last home meet of the season, Michigan State set an all-time best team scoring record in its 196.775 win over Ohio State (196.775) and West Virginia (195.975) on Feb. 28 at Jenison Field House. The Spartans smashed the school record after having tied their previous all-time best (196.575) to defeat Pittsburgh in East Lansing on Feb. 21.

RECORD-BREAKING WEEKEND
The Spartans weren't the only ones to make recent history. Each of the five opponents that MSU will meet this weekend broke a team record during competitions between Feb. 27-Feb. 29. Both Oregon State (197.175) and Brigham Young (197.550) posted all-time high team scores in the history of their gymnastics programs, while the other three schools broke season-high team scoring records. Boise State earned 196.926, Sacramento State recorded 194.05 and Seattle Pacific set a new season record with 192.175.

CHECKING OUT OREGON STATE
No. 13 Oregon State holds a regional qualifying score (RQS) of 196.485, regionally ranking them fourth in the west. Like MSU, the Beavers recently posted their all-time best score (197.175) in a loss against Stanford on Feb. 27. Oregon State head coach Tanya Chaplin is in her sixth season.

CHECKING OUT BOISE STATE
Boise State is also setting records as of late. The Broncos earned a season-high 196.926, their second-best team score in all-time school history, in a win over Denver (196.325) on Feb. 29. Boise State head coach Sam Sandmire is in her 17th season.

CHECKING OUT BRIGHAM YOUNG
The Spartans will face another tough opponent in No. 14 Brigham Young, who set a new school record in a 197.550 win over Texas Women's University and Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 28. The Cougars post a 196.455 RQS, ranking them third in the North Central region. BYU head coach Brad Cattermole is in his 16th season.

CHECKING OUT SACRAMENTO STATE
Sacramento State posts 194.05 as its season-high team score. The Hornets register 192.885 as their current RQS. In recent competition, Sac State recorded 193.125 in a loss to San Jose State on Friday, Feb. 27. Sacramento State head coach Kim Hughes is in her 24th season.

CHECKING OUT SEATTLE PACIFIC
Seattle Pacific earned a season-high 192.175 against UC Davis (189.800) and Cal State Fullerton (193.950) on Friday, Feb. 27. The Falcons RQS stands at 191.420. Seattle Pacific head coach Laurel Tindall is in her 28th year.

REGIONAL TEAM & INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
As a team, MSU is ranked fourth in the Central region (March 4th). Regionally, State is ranked fourth on beam and floor, tied with Auburn for fourth on bars, sixth on vault.

SMART OUTSIDE THE GYM, TOO
The Spartans' team grade-point average of 3.469 was the 10th best in the nation, and seven gymnasts earned National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) Academic All-American honors in 2003.
2003 senior Ilene Cohen became just the second Spartan to earn NACGC/W academic honors in each of her four years at State. Teammates Julie Devaty, Anna Hunsinger, Lauren Simpson and Lindsey Voth were all repeat honorees, while Diana Crea and Leia Langhoff made the list for the first time in their careers. Additionally, eight Spartans - Cohen, Devaty, Hunsinger, Kristin Merritt, Kristina Peterson, Simpson, Voth and Jennifer Yarbrough - were named to the 2003 Academic All-Big Ten team.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK
Michigan State gymnastics broke the all-time university scoring record (196.775) to defeat second-place West Virginia and third-place Ohio State, who earned 195.975 and 194.800 respectively, at Jenison Field House on Saturday, Feb. 28. The meet marked the Spartans' final home competition of the season.
Michigan State dominated all areas of competition, earning the meet title in every event except vault (49.025), where they took second behind West Virginia (49.300).Jaime Miles led the Spartans on vault with a 9.875, while WVU's Kari Williams claimed the meet title with an impressive 9.950 in that event.
Sarah Alexander took the meet title for both beam (9.90) and floor exercise (9.950) against OSU and WVU on Feb. 28, while Kristin Merritt posted a career-best 9.90 to capture the title for bars. Alexander's impressive 9.950 performance on the floor tied her season-best scorefor the event, while her beam score marks the third 9.90 that she has earned in the event this season.
The Spartans earned 49.175 on bars, just .25 shy of their season-best, which MSU earned at the Spartan Invitational on Feb. 14.
MSU registered 49.150 on beam, with Victoria Iakounina and Jennifer Yarbrough rounding out the Spartan top three in this event, posting 9.850 and 9.825 respectively. Iakounina's 9.850 is a career-best, surpassing her previous-best 9.80, which she earned on beam first at Central Michigan (Jan. 18) and again last week against Pittsburgh (Feb. 21).
The Green and White earned 49.425 on the floor, which marks the third-consecutive meet for which the Spartans have earned 49.400 or higher on the floor. Freshman Jenna Rivers notched 9.7 for her debut in collegiate competition in this event.

HEAD COACH Kathie Klages
Head coach Kathie Klages (Central Michigan '77) is in her 14th season at the helm of Michigan State gymnastics. In that time, she has posted a 223-111-2 record, good for a .667 winning percentage. Her teams have participated in seven NCAA Regional Championships in her time at State, including 2002 and 2003. In 2003, MSU finished fifth at the regional. Klages was named NCAA Central Region Coach of the Year in 2000, 1998, 1996 and 1993. She earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 1996. She is a member of the National Association of Women's Gymnastics Judges and holds a National ranking.
