EAST LANSING, Mich. - Three Spartans will represent the Michigan State gymnastics team at the 2014 NCAA Regionals on April 5 in Baton Rouge, La. Junior Alina Cartwright, sophomore Lisa Burt and freshman Elena Lagoski will compete at the regional championships on the campus of LSU.
Cartwright and Burt both qualified for the all-around competition at the regional meet. Leading the Spartans in the event all season, Cartwright took first-place honors in the event in three different meets. She tallied her career-best score of 39.375 when the Spartans hosted a Big Ten Quad meet on March 15 and enters the NCAA Regionals with an RQS of 39.280. Posting season-best scores in every event, Burt earned her career-high all-around score of 39.400 also at Big Ten Quad meet and owns an all-around RQS of 39.115. Both gymnasts will be making their second-straight trip to the regional meet, as they represented the Spartans at last year's NCAA Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Making her first appearance at the regional meet is Lagoksi, who will compete as an event specialist on the floor exercise. She kicked off her Spartan debut by posting a 9.900, a score that she's matched on four separate occasions this season. She qualified for the regional with an RQS of 9.890 on the event.
Last weekend, MSU competed against conference foes in the first session of the 2014 Big Ten Championships on the campus of Penn State University. Though the Spartans battled through adversity, MSU posted a score of 194.500 to place eighth overall.
Competition for the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional is set to begin at 4 p.m. on April 5 at the Maravich Center.
