MSU Gymnastics to Compete at NCAA Regionals
Cartwright, Burt and Lagoski to represent the Spartans in Regional competition.
April 4, 2014
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Three Spartans will represent Michigan State this weekend at the NCAA Regional Championships in Baton Rouge, La. Held on the campus of LSU, MSU will be represented by junior Alina Cartwright and sophomore Lisa Burt in the all around competition, while freshman Elena Lagoski will compete in the floor exercise. Both Cartwright and Burt will be making their second-straight trip to the regional meet.
“We are very proud of the three gymnasts who will be representing MSU at the regional meet,” said head coach Kathie Klages. “They competed well throughout the season and earned the right to be here. Though, I know they will miss their teammates and would rather have the entire team here. It is difficult to compete as an individual when you have had a team for the entire season. However, they are peaking right now and have looked fabulous in practices over the last two weeks. I can't wait to see what they do in the competition floor. I hope the gymnasts put it all out on the floor and leave this competition with no regrets. If they do that, no what matter what happens with placement and moving on to nationals, they can be very proud of their effort.”
Events are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 5 at the Maravich Center.
Voted to the First-Team All-Big Ten, Cartwright has been a leader for the Spartans throughout the season. She won the all-around crown in three meets this season, and notched a career-high score of 39.375 to place fourth at the Big Ten Quad Meet on March 15. Cartwright has also posted four individual wins on the vault, recording a career-best score of 9.950 against Penn State to tie for third all-time in the MSU record books. Her personal-best score of 9.900 on beam at the Big Ten Quad Meet also gave her first-place honors on the event for the third time this season. Cartwright enters the meet with the ninth-best all-around RQS (39.280) in the region, while her RQS of 9.895 on vault is No. 8.
Burt placed third in the all-around competition at the Big Ten Quad Meet with a career-high score of 39.400, as she recorded season-best scores in all four events. She tied for first on the beam at the same meet, posting a season-high 9.900 while also tying her career-best score of 9.800 on vault. Burt won the all around competition twice this season and owns the 12th-best all-around RQS (39.115) in the region.
Making her first appearance at the regional meet is Lagoksi, who will compete as an event specialist on the floor exercise. She kicked off her Spartan debut by posting a 9.900, a score that she's matched on four separate occasions this season. She qualified for the regional with an RQS of 9.890 on the event.
