Competitors  . . .
Senior Hailee Westney and freshman Lea Mitchell will both compete as individuals for the Green and White with Westney competing on uneven bars and Mitchell in the all-around.

Westney is making her fourth consecutive trip to Regionals, her second appearance as in individual. The Spartans qualified as a squad in Westney’s first two years at MSU.

Saturday marks the first appearance for Mitchell.

Westney has been a staple for the Spartan squad this season, competing in every meet and recording the most podium finishes for the Green and White with 12 including nine first-place finishes. The Milton, Ontario native took the bars competition seven times and garnered a first-place finish twice on beam.

The senior posted a career high on bars at the B1G Five meet, earning a 9.925 in her final home meet at Jenison Field House. She also registered a career-high 9.900 on beam on Feb. 4 against Penn State.

Westney was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team this season, becoming the 55th Michigan State gymnast to earn All-Big Ten accolades, as MSU has had at least one gymnast earn All-Big Ten recognition every season since 2002.

Mitchell has done it all for the Spartans, entering the season as one of the Big Ten’s Gymnasts to Watch. The Boynton Beach native has been an anchor in the all-around competition for the Green and White this season, claiming 19 podium finishes in her debut season as a Spartan. Mitchell earned eight first-place crowns this season, including two all-around victories.

The top two teams from each regional, along with the top two all-around competitors not on an advancing team, will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, which will be held April 20-21 in St. Louis, Missouri hosted by the University of Missouri, Columbia, and the St. Louis Sports Commission. In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.

Quotable with Coach Rowe  . . .
“Both Lea and Hailee have had great workouts since Big Ten’s and we’ve focused on fixing the half-tenths, as well as consistency,” said head coach Mike Rowe. “We’re so excited for them to have qualified, getting the opportunity to represent Michigan State gymnastics and demonstrate everything they’ve strived and been working so hard for. Most of their teammates are traveling to Columbus to cheer them on, too!”
