Six Michigan State Gymnasts Named NACGC/W Scholar All-Americans

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Six members of the 2017 Michigan State gymnastics team have been named Scholar All-Americans by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). Nicola Deans, Gabriella Douglas, Kira Frederick, Anna Gamelo, Victoria Huehn and Jessica Ling were recognized for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2016-17 academic year.

Deans, a senior humanities major from Mississauga, Ontario, led MSU with a 3.89 GPA. During the 2017 season, Deans was also an Academic All-Big Ten. Deans capped her Spartan career by being co-Big Ten champion on the floor with a 9.925, sharing the conference crown with teammates Frederick and Elena Lagoski. In addition to earning All-Big Ten honors, Deans also collected All-Big Ten Championship team accolades and qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the all-around.

Douglas is a freshman and also hails from Mississauga, Ontario, logging a 3.87 GPA as a kinesiology major. The Spartan freshman qualified for the Big Ten Championships on vault and floor.

Frederick, a senior chemistry major from Orange Park, Florida, posted a 3.52 GPA, also collecting Academic All-Big Ten accolades. She was one of three Spartans to be co-Big Ten champion on floor with a 9.925, earning All-Big Ten and All-Big Ten Championship team honors. Frederick also qualified for the NCAA Regionals, tying for fourth on the floor exercise to make the podium with a score of 9.850.



Gamelo is a junior from Toronto, Ontario with a 3.82 GPA majoring in experience architecture, also earning Academic All-Big Ten plaudits. She finished 11th on vault at the Big Ten Championships with a 9.725.

Huehn, a junior from Ann Arbor, Michigan, logged a 3.52 GPA as an English major. She also collected Academic All-Big Ten accolades. Huehn qualified for the Big Ten Championships on balance beam.

Ling is a sophomore from Walled Lake, Michigan, and tallied a 3.71 GPA majoring in kinesiology. She also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.

A total of 679 gymnastics student-athletes from 73 institutions qualified for the NACGC/W Scholastic All-American Awards this season.
