Five Spartan Gymnasts Receive Academic All-American Honors

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Five members of the 2012 Michigan State women’s gymnastics team have been named Scholar All-Americans, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). The gymnasts were recognized for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2011 academic year.
Leading the team with a 3.92 GPA for the year was sophomore Carson Tabiolo, a psychology major from Aiea, Hawai’i. Tabiolo also earned the 2012 MSU Spirit Award.
A 2010 and 2011 Scholar All-American, senior Kathryn Mahoney earned a 3.85 GPA for the year. The Western Springs, Ill., native was forced to miss the 2011 and 2012 season after undergoing successful surgery to stabilize her C6 vertebra that was fractured while vaulting in a practice. Twice-chosen as an Academic All-Big Ten selection, the chemical engineering major was named MSU’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. In 2011, the team created the Kathryn Mahoney Award given to the gymnast who displays courage, strength and determination throughout the year.
Kelsey Mazur, a junior from LaGrange, Ill., was named Scholar All-American for the second year in a row after earning a GPA of 3.67. A nutritional science major, Mazur recorded did not see action in 2012 due to an injury.
Thrice-named Scholar All-American, Daneen Haba graduated from MSU with a degree in kinesiology after posting a 3.62 GPA in 2011-2012. A native of Germantown, Tenn., Haba recorded a career-high 9.825 on vault against Alaska-Anchorage and was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2011 and 2012.
Another 2012 graduate, Alyssa Brennan posted a GPA of 3.5, completing her degree in kinesiology. Appearing as a Scholar All-American for the third time, Brennan was named an Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2010 and 2012 and earned the 2012 MSU Coach’s Award.
With this year’s total, head coach Kathie Klages has now posted 109 student-athletes on the NACGC/W Scholar All-Americans list over her 22 years at the helm of the Spartans.
Southern Utah took the overall NCAA women’s gymnastics cumulative team GPA with a 3.843. Michigan State had the 28th-best GPA in the nation this year with a 3.665.
