EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women’s gymnastics program announced its 2018 schedule Wednesday.
The schedule is highlighted by five home meets featuring Bowling Green, Iowa, Penn State, Illinois and a quad with Rutgers, Pitt and Eastern Michigan. In addition to the five home meets, the Spartan squad will host the Big Ten Conference Big Five Meet.
Head coach Mike Rowe enters his first season at the helm of the gymnastics program. Rowe served as the interim head coach beginning Feb. 2017 before being named head coach.
“The Big Ten is going to be even more exciting and competitive this year with the addition of some new blood and transitions in coaching staffs,” said Rowe. “From the start of the season, it will be interesting to see who comes out of the gates strong. We'll see Iowa, Rutgers, Minnesota, Penn State and Michigan during the first part of the season while meeting Maryland, Ohio State, Nebraska and Illinois at the Big Five that we are hosting on March 17.”
The Spartans will kick off the 2018 season with the annual Green and White Meet on Nov. 17. The meet will take place at 6 p.m. in the third floor training center in Jenison Field House. On Dec. 16, the team will host the Meet the Spartans event in the arena at Jenison Field House at 2 p.m.
MSU will officially begin its 2018 season on Jan. 5 when it hosts Bowling Green for a dual meet.
Following BGSU, the Green and White jumps into Big Ten action, first hosting Iowa on Jan. 13 before heading to Minnesota for a dual on Jan. 20. The meet against Iowa will be the yearly Alumni, Community Groups and Clubs night for the Spartans.
From there, the Spartans will return home for two consecutive weeks, first to host a quad with Rutgers, Pitt and Eastern Michigan on Jan. 27 in its annual Jan Howard Breast Cancer Awareness meet. On Feb. 4, MSU will host Big Ten opponent Penn State as a part of the Tumbles and Takedowns paired with MSU wrestling.
Next on tap for the Spartans will be in-state rival Michigan in a dual scheduled for Feb. 10 in Ann Arbor.
The Spartans will then have one more regular-season home meet, doubling as senior night, against Illinois on Feb. 17, before hitting the road for the final three meets for the 2018 regular season. The Green and White will travel to Iowa State for a meet with ISU and Minnesota on Feb. 23 before heading to Illinois-Chicago on March 4 and wrapping up at Oregon State on March 10.
After the three-meet roadtrip, MSU returns to East Lansing to host the Big Five Meet on March 17.
“We're thrilled to have the opportunity to host one of two B1G 5 qualifiers to the B1G Championships this year in Jenison Field House. It's always exciting to get the home floor advantage with the support of all our Spartan fans,” concluded Rowe.
The Big Ten Championships are scheduled for March 24 in Champaign, Ill., hosted by Illinois.
Times for the 2018 season will be announced at a later date.
