Gymnastics Adds Four to Class of 2013

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages has announced the program's initial signings for the recruiting class of 2013. The class includes Kira Frederick (Orange Park, Fla.), Elena Lagoski (Kingston, Pa.), Jessica Shostak (Elmhurst, Ill.), and Jane Winstead (Oak Hill, Va.).
"This class of gymnasts are full of excitement about becoming Spartans," said Klages. "They bring a strong desire to propel this program up the national rankings. We are looking forward to them joining our Spartan gymnastics family."
Kira Frederick Orange Park, Fla./ Ridgeview North Florida Gymnastics
Prior to Michigan State: Attends Ridgeview High School...Coached by Mary Purvis at North Florida Gymnastics...Five-time Level 10 USAG regional and state qualifier (2008-12)...Recognized as Level 10 USAG Region 8 regional all-around champion in 2012...Honored as 2012 Level 10 USAG national qualifier...Named Level 10 USAG NIT qualifier in 2011...First place on beam and second in all-around at 2011 NIT Championships...Lettered in cross country in 2012.
Personal: Born Feb. 24, 1995 to Kendall and Jenn Frederick...Plans on majoring in mechanical engineering.
Klages on Frederick: "Kira Frederick is a very consistent performer and will help put stability into the line-up. She brings national Level experience to our program which will aid her on the competition floor. She also brings a unique flare to our program and we believe that her best gymnastics is still to come.
Elena Lagoski Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West Northeast Gymnastics Academy
Prior to Michigan State: Attends Wyoming Valley West High School...Coached by Lori Dexter at Northeast Gymnastics Academy...Two-time Junior Olympics national qualifier (2011-12)...Fourth place finish on bars and beam at the 2012 regional championships...Awarded fourth place on floor and all-around at 2011 Region 6 regional championships...Finished sixth on vault at 2011 Region 6 championships.
Personal: Born June 23, 1995, to Jimmy and Tina Griffin...Plans to major in chemistry.
Klages on Lagoski: "Elena Lagoski is an extremely talented gymnast who is a very feisty competitor. She will help improve the Level of difficulty with the skills in her routines. She brings power and finesse with her style of gymnastics."
Jessica Shostak Elmhurst Ill./York Community Balance Institute of Gymnastics
Prior to Michigan State: Attends York Community High School...Coached by Kara Kapernekas at Balance Institute of Gymnastics...Named 2012 Level 10 Illinois state and regional qualifier...Recognized as 2011 Level 9 Illinois state qualifier...Honored as 2010 Illinois state qualifier and regional qualifier.
Personal: Born July 31, 1995 to Joe and Judy Shostak...Member of the National Honor Society... Plans to major in pre-medicine.
Klages on Shostak: "Jessica Shostak has committed to attend MSU and will bring depth to our program. She excels on vault, bars and beam and will challenge for a line-up spot in these events. She is very excited about becoming a Spartan and can't wait to begin her career."
Jane Winstead Oakhill Va./Westfield Apollo Gymnastics Club
Prior to Michigan State: Attends Westfield High School...Coached by Ken Anderson at Apollo Gymnastics Club...Finished fifth in all-around at 2011 Regional Championships...Named 2011 Virginia State Floor Champion...Recognized as 2011 qualifier to Eastern National championships.
Personal: Born March 10, 1995 to Kevin and Debbi Winstead...Honor roll 2010-13 of high school including summa cum laude...2011-12 AP German Outstanding Student Award...Plans to major in physiology.
Klages on Winstead: "Jane Winstead has committed to attend MSU and brings a strong desire to excel to the program. She fell in love with Michigan State's campus the minute she stepped onto it and is very excited to become a Spartan. We expect Jane to contribute on beam and floor as she is very flexible and has beautiful lines."
