Nov. 22, 2013
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics head coach Kathie Klages has announced the addition of three gymnasts to the Spartan squad for the fall of 2014. The class includes Gabriella Douglas, Hailee Westney and Victoria Huehn.
A native of Georgetown, Ontario, Gabriella “Ella” Douglas is a Canadian national standout who will be deferring her enrollment until the fall of 2016 with hopes of qualifying for the Canadian Olympic team. Competing for East York Gymnastics, she was coached by Lawson Hamer and Lisa Cowan. Douglas earned first-place honors in the all-around at the 2011 Canadian Nationals, before being named to Team Canada as a senior in September of 2012. Most recently, Douglass finished in the top-10 on the balance beam at the 2013 Pan American Championships. The reigning Canadian national floor champion, she will be graduating from christ the King.
“Ella is an extremely powerful gymnast with years of experience at high level competitions, which include numerous international meets,” said Klages. “In her most recent competition, she represented Canada in the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico. She has some very unique skills that make her stand out from her competitors. Ella is the most nationally-decorated athlete that we have had commit to MSU under my tutelage. She will be worth the wait!”
Hailee Westney, who competes for Futures Gymnastics in Canada, most recently qualified to represent Team Ontario at the 2013 National Championships where the team took home first-place honors. Individually, she is the current Canadian national beam champion. At the 2012 Senior Nationals, she earned first-place overall after winning the gold medal on beam as a 2011 junior national competitor. She will be graduating from Our Lady of Mount Carmel and hails from Milton, Ontario.
“Hailee is an elegant gymnast with her long lines and gorgeous dance skills,” Klages said. “She will make an immediate impact on our team in three events. She is a superb bar swinger that can compete with anyone in the country. Her beam and floor routines are pleasing to the eye with many distinctive skills that set her apart from the pack. She is so fun to watch!“
Coming to MSU from nearby Ypsilanti, Mich., Victoria “Tori” Huehn will be joining the team as a preferred walk on. Huen placed third in the all-around at the 2012 state championship meet competing for Oakland Gymnastics. She also won the all-around title at regionals. She has been competing as a Level-9 and 10 gymnast and also specializes on the vault and beam.
“Tori recently committed to MSU and as a local Michigander we are thrilled to have her join our team,” Klages said. “She excels at vault and with her power and consistency, she will be a great asset to our lineup. We also expect her to be competitive on the other events as she brings years of Level 9 and 10 experiences to our program. She is the ideal addition to our 2014 class!”
The Spartans will kick off the season with the Green & White Scrimmage on Dec. 8 at 12 p.m.
