Dec. 16, 2013

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnastics junior Alina Cartwright and freshman Elena Lagoski were selected as Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch for the upcoming 2014 season, as announced by the conference office. The Spartans were also voted seventh in the Big Ten preseason coaches’ poll.

Cartwright led the team on both the vault and uneven bars at the annual Green & White meet on Dec. 8. Hoping to build off of a successful sophomore campaign, the Naperville, Ill., native earned a career-high 9.95 on vault against Denver to tie for third all-time in the MSU record books. She was one of three Spartans to represent Michigan State at the NCAA Regional. On beam, Cartwright qualified with a career-high of 9.850 against Michigan.  She was also an alternate in the all-around which she posted a career-high of 39.125 at the 2013 Big Ten Championships. It marked her second-straight trip to the regional meet as she competed for MSU in the vault, bars and beam in 2011.

Spartan newcomer Elena Lagoski comes to Michigan State from Kingston, Pa. where she was a 2011 and 2012 Junior Olympic national qualifier. She also placed fourth on both the bars and beam at the 2012 regional championship. Lagoski turned in a statement routine on the floor exercise at the Green & White meet as the Spartans top performer.

The Spartans will host Western Michigan for their final scrimmage on Friday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. on the third floor of Jenison Field House and is set to begin the regular season at home against Illinois on Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.
