Tammy Anderson Named Michigan State Women's Assistant Soccer Coach
East Lansing, MI -- Michigan State Head Women's Soccer Coach Tom Saxton has announced that Tammy Anderson, a former Spartan player, will join the program as assistant coach. Anderson takes the place of Staci Hendershott who was recently named head women's soccer coach at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Anderson returns to her alma mater after serving as both the head women's soccer coach and women's athletic director at Alma College since 1994. In addition, she also directed the women's tennis program from 1995. Prior to her appointment at Alma, she was involved in the women's soccer program at East Lansing High School from 1992 through 1994, the last year as assistant coach on the varsity team.
"I'm certainly excited about bringing Tammy in as an assistant coach," Saxton said. "She will bring a lot to the the program, having enjoyed a successful career here while acquiring coaching experience at Alma. She knows the game very well and has some good insights to it."
Anderson lettered as a member of the MSU women's soccer team from 1989 through 1992. A full-time starter her last three seasons, she served as co-captain of the 1992 squad that finished with a 10-6-2 mark. During her four years, which spanned 74 contests, she tallied 29 points on eight goals and 13 assists from a backfield position, with MSU compiling a 50-22-3 (.687) won-lost ledger. She earned her bachelor's degree in physical education and exercise science from MSU in 1994.
"It's a dream to come back to Michigan State to work with Tom and the program," Anderson said. "Both Tom and Joe Baum helped me get into the coaching profession and I wanted to return and help out in any way I can. I believe that I have the ability to motivate players, having served as a captain while at MSU, and that will be one of my roles here. I am really impressed with the talent level that the program has and look forward to this opportunity."
The MSU women's soccer team opens its regular season on Friday, August 29, against Western Michigan at home starting at 4:00 p.m.
