Aug. 29, 2003
East Lansing, Mich.-The Michigan State women's soccer team opened the 2003 season with a 1-0 victory over Furman at Old College Field on Friday afternoon. This is the fourth-straight season the Spartans have won the season opener. Furman falls to 0-1 with the loss.
Michigan State's Abby Shepherd (Jr., Milford) scored the only goal of the game during the first half at 24:18 with assists by Andrea Sied (Sr., Livonia) and Tiffany Laskowski (Sr., Troy). The Spartans out-shot the Paladins, 12-11, and with nine shots in the second half MSU continued to attack the strong defense of the Paladins, but was unable to find the back of the net.
Furman's Goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw finished the game with five saves. Stacy Heller (Sr., Madison, Wis.) finished the game with four saves, including a couple of spectacular stops in the first half, recording her first shutout of the season. With the shutout, Heller ties Sarah Kloosterman for the MSU career lead with 16.5 shutouts.
"This game wasn't pretty, but it was a much needed win," said MSU coach Tom Saxton of the win over a 2002 NCAA Tournament squad. "Furman was a key game for us because one of our goals is to be strong at home this year. This game was one we had to have."
Michigan State returns to action Monday (Sept. 1) when it travels to West Virginia for a 3:00 p.m. game.
