Spartans Defeated by No. 23 OSU
Nov. 5, 2010
The Michigan State women's soccer team completed the 2010 regular season with a 1-0 loss at Ohio State on Friday night (Nov. 5). The Spartans end their schedule with a record of 3-4-3 in the Big Ten and 9-6-4 overall.
The Buckeyes' Paige Maxwell tallied the first goal of the evening with a shot from inside the goalie box. Lauren Granberg passed the ball across the field, setting Maxwell up from about eight yards out. Granberg and Kristen Niederhaus each notched their second assists on the play. Maxwell earned her first goal of the season in the 13th minute of competition.
Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Watza provided excellent play against Ohio State. In the first half alone, she stopped three attempts by the Buckeyes. By the end of the matchup, the OSU had 13 shots fired at the Spartan net, and Watza registered five saves.
With the NCAA Tournament on the line, the Spartans left everything on the field, resulting in an emotional contest. Michigan State was called on 13 fouls, while OSU committed 10, and each team was served one yellow card.
"We threw everything we had at Ohio State, but we just couldn't overcome an early lapse," said head coach Tom Saxton. "We settled down in the second half though, and it was an even game from then on. Gave them a go, but it just wasn't enough."
Michigan State will have to wait - and do some scoreboard watching around the country - until Monday (Nov. 8) for the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field.
