EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's soccer player Laura Heyboer was named Freshman of the Year by SoccerBuzz.com it was announced this week. Heyboer also became the first player in MSU history to earn SoccerBuzz.com second-team All-America honors.

In her rookie campaign, Heyboer scored 21 goals and totaled 51 points on her way to collecting Big Ten Freshman and Offensive Player of the Year honors. After just one season, she ranks 11th on MSU's all-time goal list and 14th on the career-points chart.

Heyboer also earned a spot on the Freshman All-America first-team and was joined by fellow freshman Katelin Chaklos, who garnered second-team accolades.

Chaklos was one of five Spartans to start all 24 games in 2008. She also registered two assists.

Heyboer, a Hudsonville, Mich., native, was named Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year in addition to earning a spot on the all-region first-team. Juniors Lauren Sinacola and Lauren Hill collected All-Great Lakes second-team accolades.

MSU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships this season and posted its fifth 14-win season in school history.
