MSU will open the campaign in California, taking on a pair of 2013 NCAA Tournament teams in San Diego State on Aug. 22 and then Cal State Fullerton on Aug. 24.

"Starting the season in California will be a challenge and it will give us a good indication of where we are as a team," said Saxton, who will be entering his 24th season as head coach. "We have a very challenging schedule and we're excited for the test."

Prior to heading to California, the Spartans will meet Final Four participant Virginia in their lone exhibition game on Aug. 15 in Maple City, Michigan.

MSU, which went 9-8-2 last season, including 5-4-2 in East Lansing, will play its first of nine home games on Friday, Aug. 29 against Eastern Michigan. After a trip to Oakland on Sept. 2, the Spartans will play four consecutive games at DeMartin Stadium. Michigan State will face IPFW on Friday, Sept. 5 in the first of the season-long home stand and then meet defending MAC champion Western Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 7.

With the addition of Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten this season, the conference schedule has been expanded to 13 games. The Spartans' conference slate will begin on Friday, Sept. 12 when they host Wisconsin, while two days later the Green and White will take on Minnesota. The Sunday, Sept. 14 game vs. the Gophers will also be Alumni Day.

Michigan State will visit conference newcomers Rutgers and Maryland on Sept. 19 and Sept. 21, respectively.

"We're obviously very excited to compete in the newly-expanded Big Ten. It's great to have Rutgers and Maryland as a part of the conference and we look forward having the opportunity to play out there this season," Saxton said.

The Spartans will face rival Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 27 in Ann Arbor.

The month of October will begin with a pair of home games against Iowa on Thursday, Oct. 2 and then vs. 2013 Big Ten champion Nebraska on Sunday, Oct. 5.

The Spartans will play at Purdue on Oct. 11 before returning to East Lansing for their final two home games of the season. Michigan State will host Ohio State on Thursday, Oct. 16 and then Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 19.

MSU will close the regular season with three consecutive road games, beginning with a pair in the state of Illinois. The Spartans will meet Illinois in Champaign on Friday, Oct. 24 and then Northwestern on Sunday, Oct. 26 in Evanston.

The final game of the regular season will take place Friday, Oct. 31 at Indiana.

The 2014 Big Ten Tournament will feature the top-eight teams from the regular-season standings and will be hosted by Purdue, Nov. 5-9 in West Lafayette, Indiana.
