EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team will face Virginia in an exhibition contest at 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon (Aug. 22) at Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich.

Michigan State returns nine starters from its 2002 NCAA Tournament squad, including three First-Team All-Big Ten honorees. Stacy Heller (Sr., Madison Wis.) enters her third season as starting goalkeeper after recording 102 saves and seven shutouts in 2002. Midfielder Abby Shepherd (Jr., Milford, Mich.) enters her second year with the Spartans, also earning First-Team All-Great Lakes Regional honors in 2002. Co-captain Andrea Sied (Sr., Livonia, Mich.) enters her senior year with the Spartans as the foundation of the MSU defense. Senior co-captain Tiffany Laskowski (Sr., Troy, Mich.) was a 2002 Second-Team All-Big Ten honoree and is the team's leading returning scorer after posting nine goals and 23 points last season.

The 2002 Spartan squad was the first team in MSU women's soccer history to advance to the NCAA Tournament, posting a 12-7-2 record. Last year, Virginia advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Penn State. This season, the Cavaliers are picked to finish second in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Spartans will open the regular season at home Friday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. against Furman at Old College Field.
