East Lansing, Mich. -- - Michigan State junior centerback Annie Steinlage (Grand Haven, Mich.) has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the Conference office on Monday, Sept. 3. Steinlage and the Spartans downed Akron, 2-1, at home on Sunday in MSU's only game of the week.
The junior tied her career best with a goal and an assist in the contest. She first assisted on Kelsey Mullen's first-half marker, then scored the game-winner in the 81st minute to help the Spartans improve to 4-1-0 on the season. Steinlage is also a standout for the Spartans on the defensive end, and helped limit the Zips to just one shot on goal in the afternoon.
"Annie made a big play in a difficult match against Akron," said head coach Tom Saxton. "She is a great leader for our defense and one of our top offensive threats as well. We are all proud that she was recognized by the Big Ten this week."
The Spartans have a pair of games in the upcoming week - they travel to Oakland for a game on Wednesday evening (7 p.m.), then will play at home next Sunday against Eastern Michigan.
