Senior honored for academic & athletic excellence
Dec. 1, 2011
Senior Laura Heyboer (Hudsonville, Mich.) was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women's Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Heyboer was named to the first team, while teammate Jill Flietstra (Hudsonville, Mich.) was a second team All-District selection earlier this fall.
A Kinesiology major with a 3.56 G.P.A., Heyboer finished her career as the all-time leading scorer in Michigan State history. A four-time All-Big Ten Conference first team selection, Heyboer helped Michigan State win a program-best seven Big Ten games this season. She is only one of five players to be named first team All-Big Ten four times in her career. She will graduate with school records for goals scored (57), assists (25), points (139) and game-winning goals (19). A native of Hudsonville, Mich., she is the fourth-leading scorer in Big Ten history. She scored 18 goals as a senior, the eighth-highest mark in NCAA Division I.
Flietstra graduates as the Spartan career leader in both goals against average (.75) and shutouts (28). She is also second in career wins (32), and third in career saves (279). Flietstra ranks fourth all-time in both career GAA and shutouts in the Big Ten annals as well. She holds a 3.9 grade point average as a criminal justice major.
The 11 members of the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Women's Soccer first team had an average G.P.A. of 3.913.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
