Senior Kelly Smith threw the 20th no-hitter in school history, while junior Carly Nielsen came off the bench to hit a pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Michigan State earned a 1-0 non-conference win over Eastern Michigan.
No. 5 Michigan (33-6, 12-0 Big Ten) blew open a tight game with a big seventh inning, which included three of its four home runs on the day in a 14-0 victory over Michigan State at Secchia Stadium to secure a series sweep.
The Michigan State softball team dropped the second game of the weekend set with No. 5 Michigan, 8-0 this afternoon at Secchia Stadium. Junior Alyssa McBride went 2-for-2 for the Spartans (9-27, 2-11).
Michigan State trailed No. 5 Michigan 3-1 after three and a half innings of play, but the host Wolverines plated three runs in each the fourth and fifth innings to post a 9-1 victory in the first of three games between the teams. Only one Wolverine starter went without hit, and pitcher Haylie Wagner helped her own cause with three RBI.
