Michigan State split its two games in the final action of its spring break trip at the Florida Atlantic Tournament, downing Hofstra, 1-0 in the opening game before falling to Virginia Tech, 9-1, in five innings in the second contest. MSU allowed one big inning (seven runs on seven hits), which was too much to overcome.
Michigan State had a rough opening day at the Florida Atlantic Tournament, falling 2-1 in the opener to Marshall and dropping an eight-inning heartbreaker to FAU in the nightcap. MSU falls to 5-13 and has lost five straight, with the last three coming in either extra innings or a team's final at-bat.
Thursday's game at Florida Atlantic University has been cancelled due to weather. The game, originally scheduled for 5 p.m. today, was moved up to 3 p.m. to attempt to get it in before the storm hit Miami, but the game was called in the bottom of the first inning with MSU leading 1-0.
Michigan State wraps up a nine-day road trip over Spring Break with five games over three days. The Spartans play Thursday (3 p.m.) at Florida International, then two games each on Friday and Saturday at the Florida Atlantic Tournament.
Michigan State staked a 5-0 lead early in Tuesday night's contest at Florida Atlantic, but committed six errors in the balance of the game and fell, 6-5, to the host Owls in eight innings. MSU is now 5-11 on the year, which includes three extra-inning losses.
