Softball Falls To Seton Hall In Final Game Of USF/Wilson Tournament
Feb. 16, 2004
TAMPA, Fla. - Michigan State softball fell to Seton Hall, 7-2, in the final game of the USF/Wilson Tournament in Tampa Monday morning. State third baseman Brittney Green was 1-3 with a home run and an RBI in the game. The Spartans' record moves to 2-2 on the season, while the Pirates are now 2-1. "We came down here with an overall goal of compiling a list of things that we need to work on," said head coach Jacquie Joseph. "We achieved that goal. We saw a lot of good things from the team this weekend, and we have a lot of things yet to work on. We'll do that, and we're looking forward to playing next weekend." MSU freshman Christy McGrew allowed three hits in the first inning of the game, as she gave up a home run to Katie Pierce. State answered with Green's leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning, but wasn't able to score again until the bottom of the fourth when the Spartans closed the gap to 3-2, but couldn't overcome the one-run deficit. Seton Hall crossed the plate twice in the top of the fifth and twice more in the top of the sixth, making the final 7-2. MSU struggled defensively, as it committed three errors in the game. McGrew allowed five runs on six hits and two walks in the 4.1 innings she worked. She struck out three. Freshman pitcher Jackie Noble saw her first action of the year, and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk in 2.0 innings pitched. The Spartans were held to just four hits in the game, as Green, Dayna Feenstra, Elizabeth Peterson and Janette Hurtado each went 1-3 at the plate.
State travels to Las Vegas for a four-game tournament at UNLV Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 21-22. The Spartans face Texas-El Paso at 4 p.m. on Feb. 21 and Louisiana-Monroe at 8 p.m. Sunday, MSU takes on Arkansas at 1 p.m. and UNLV at 3 p.m.
