TEMPE, Ariz. - Michigan State softball defeated Illinois State, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon in the Littlewood Classic. Junior Kelly Smith compiled seven strikeouts and pitched a complete game for the Spartans.
In the first game of the day, MSU (4-4) defeated UIC, 11-7.
"I am very impressed with both wins," said head coach Jacquie Joseph. "We found a way to win with two completely different styles. We won a slugfest and we won a close tightly pitch barn burner."
After four scoreless innings, Illinois State (4-4) scored the first run at the top of the fifth inning.
Michigan State rallied in the bottom of the fifth to score three runs. Sophomore Ellie Stoffer reached first base on a fielding error at shortstop. With two outs, freshman Dani Goranson pinch hit for sophomore Alyssa McBride and hit a single to left field, as Stoffer advanced to second. McBride came back in as a runner as sophomore McKinzie Freimuth hit a single to center field and earned an RBI as Stoffer crossed the plate. Senior Jenny Ramsaier singled to second base and McBride scored an unearned run on a throwing error by the Redbirds. Scoring the final run for MSU was Freimuth after senior Kylene Hopkins hit a single to shortstop, earning her second RBI of the day.
Illinois State cut the lead to 3-2 on a solo homer in the top of the seventh, but Smith closed out the game to seal the victory for the Spartans.
Freimuth was 2-for-2 and Hopkins was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the MSU offense.
Smith picked up her third win of the season, allowing five hits and two runs, both earned.
Michigan State will finish its appearance at the Littlewood Classic tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. ET against Northern Iowa.
