FORT MYERS, Fla. – Michigan State softball shut out St. Bonaventure 12-0 Friday night at the Florida Gulf Coast Airport Spring Break Invitational. Seniors Jayme O’Bryant and Jenny Ramsaier along with junior Sarah Bowling each tallied three RBIs. Junior Kelly Smith pitched a complete game to earn her fifth victory of the season.
Senior Kylene Hopkins was the first to cross the plate in the first inning after O’Bryant hit an RBI single to right center field.
In the third inning, MSU tallied another run as O’Bryant sacrificed to right field for Hopkins to score.
The Spartans (6-4) gained momentum as they notched five runs in the top of the fourth. Ramsaier hit a three-run double in the inning, and sophomores McKinzie Freimuth, Alyssa McBride and Carly Nielsen all registered a run for Michigan State. Freshman Destinee Luna singled to the right side to send Ramsaier home, then Bowling hit a single to pick up an RBI as Luna scored.
Kicking off the fifth inning, Nielsen and Freimuth scored on a throwing error by the Bonnies, giving MSU a 9-0 lead to start the inning. Sarah Bowling hit a triple to send Luna and Ramsaier home. Finishing off the inning, O’Bryant notched her third RBI with a single to the right field and Bowling crossed the plate.
On the mound, Smith compiled six strikeouts and only allowed two hits and three walks to the Bonnies.
Michigan State will face Albany Saturday at 11:15 a.m. and St. Bonaventure at 8:15 p.m.
