EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State softball topped Indiana 5-0 in its conference and home opener on Friday afternoon at Secchia Stadium. Junior Kelly Smith tallied seven strikeouts in the shutout win, while junior Sarah Bowling and freshman Destinee Luna both notched two RBIs.

Michigan State (15-13) started off swinging in the bottom of the first inning.  Sophomore Ellie Stoffer singled to shortstop as senior Kylene Hopkins put the first run on the scoreboard from a throwing error.  Bowling was next at bat and hit a single up the middle to send Stoffer and senior Jayme O’Bryant home.  The Spartans led after the first inning, 3-0.

After a scoreless second inning, Luna hit a double to center field to advance senior Jenny Ramsaier and Bowling across the plate.  The Hoosiers stopped Luna at third base for the third out of the inning.

Both teams held a strong defense for the last four innings, finalizing the score at 5-0.

On the mound, Smith now owns a 12-7 record after throwing her fifth shutout of the season. She also limited the Hoosiers (16-17, 1-3 Big Ten) to just four hits. Smith now has 132 strikeouts, which already ranks 10th most in an MSU single-season.

Ramsaier went 2-for-3 and sophomore Alyssa McBride was 2-for-4.

The Spartans continue their series with Indiana on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m. at Secchia Stadium.
