EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State softball swept Indiana with a 2-1 win in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon at Secchia Stadium. The Spartans improved their record to 17-13 on the season, 3-0 in Big Ten play. Junior Kelly Smith pitched the complete game. Senior Jayme O'Bryant earned the only MSU RBI.
After three scoreless innings, Indiana (16-19, 1-5) notched the first run in the top of the fourth inning.
The Spartans matched the Hoosier run with a home run to center field by O'Bryant.
Neither team was able to score, as the game went into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, O'Bryant hit a double to right center just inside the fence. Indiana then intentionally walked redshirt sophomore Stephanie Sanders, who stole second, and senior Jenny Ramsaier. With the bases loaded for the Spartans, freshman Destinee Luna hit a fielder's choice to second and O'Bryant advanced home on an error by Indiana's catcher.
Smith pitched for the Spartans a complete game and tallied nine strikeouts to improve her record to 13-7 on the season. Smith allowed one run, unearned, and now sits at eighth in the MSU recordbook for single-season strikeouts with 145.
Next up, Michigan State will continue its home game stretch and face Penn State in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 2. The two teams will begin the competition at 3 p.m. at Secchia Stadium.
